N3 was the National Health Service’s national high-speed broadband network connecting 1.3 million employees across all of England’s NHS locations as well as the wider health community. However, the network is in the process of being phased out as it will be unable to cope with the large increase in network capacity that will be required as medical services advance, technology develops and patient demand for critical services soars.

In 2017, a 5-year plan was launched by the NHS focussing on updating technology to improve healthcare services. As part of this plan, all NHS departments have been given the mandate to move to the new Health and Social Care Network (HSCN) by 2020.
