As the cold dark autumnal nights creep in that little bit earlier each day, cyber criminals are working around the clock, more persistent than ever before to exfiltrate and maliciously encrypt your assets.
MLL Telecom, a leading provider of secure managed network services to the UK Public Sector, have also been relentless in productising our new secure-by-design cyber security solutions to combat the prolific threat landscape and persistent cyber security threat actors that Public Sector organisations tirelessly try to fend off on a daily basis. The National Cyber Security Centre’s research shows that Ransomware and data exfiltration coupled with malicious ciphering of data has been the biggest development of cyber crime since 2017: https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/blog-post/ransomware-cyber-crime-ecosystem
Joining from major security software provider, Ray Burke was previously employed at Sophos, where he was Global Cybersecurity Solutions Sales Engineer with responsibility for Europe, Africa and North America, Ray has orchestrated cost effective, compliant defence-in-depth cyber security strategies for public and private sector organisations word-wide.
Ray Burke has responsibility for developing MLL’s Managed Detection and Response (MDR) cybersecurity solutions practice which forms an integral part of the company’s new cyber security offering, being delivered in true CSaaS – Cyber Security as a Service.
“I am delighted to have joined MLL at this exciting time in the company’s development and where a world-class cybersecurity capability is seen as key to its future growth,” said Ray Burke. “With security breaches on the rise in the Public Sector and an ever-growing attack surface, having access to effective cyber protection around the clock is now a major challenge for many of our clients – compounded by the shortage of skilled security professionals – the skills gap.”
He added: “Our new Managed Detection and Response service will build on MLL’s existing strengths in secure connectivity and SD-WAN orchestration to offer a 24/7 outsourced SOC (Security Operations Centre) and endpoint protection solution that integrates with the network and firewall tooling we see organisations using today, without needing to displace existing services. This will include flexible monthly subscription ‘as a service’ offerings, providing robust end-to-end contextualised protection and countermeasures for safeguarding our clients in the event of attack.”
The National Cyber Security Centre, NCSC, advise that by 2025 over half of organisations will be using a human-led threat hunting service to secure their IT infrastructure, and Gartner suggests that more than half of enterprise IT spending in key market segments will shift to the cloud by 2025, as Public Sector bodies seek Zero Trust Network Access and SASE solutions that are “always on, able to connect from anywhere, seamlessly” services that are cloud-native. This shift in mindset brings with it complexities as the secure perimeter of networks grow and shift exponentially.
Mark Gibbons, Director of Technology Services, advises “As a secure connectivity partner to organisations critical to society, security is built into what we do. Ray’s appointment enables us to support our customers beyond connectivity, with best-of-breed solutions for end point and server protection. As zero trust connectivity increases in prevalence, this is a crucial component of a holistic approach to keeping our customers secure. I’m excited to see where our growing security offerings take us, and our customers, next.”
One of the challenges organisations have faced is a vast array of cyber security tools being implemented to defeat advanced persistent threats, but lack of resource often means the noise being produced by these systems is difficult to manage well. By implementing a human-led SOC services this noise can be rationalised and contextualised so that priority cases can be focused on and investigated appropriately, and in a timely manner. By transferring the risk to a human-led threat hunting services, our clients are able to improve their cyber security posture and focus on helpdesk activities in house, operating in a more productive way.
According to the Manchester University Alliance Manchester Business School, the severity of attacks and advancing persistent tactics used by threat actors today are such that sadly it is not a case of if an organisation will be attacked but when and MLL is set to ensure their clients have the best possible end-to-end cyber security posture to give cyber criminals a hard time.
