MLL Telecom Becomes a Corporate Member of the Science Museum
2 June 2011
MLL Telecom has become a corporate member of the Science Museum, part of a group of industry leaders committed to supporting science and learning.
Richard Brandon, head of strategy at MLL Telecom said, 'We are committed to supporting science and engineering education and are proud to be working with such a great institution, which helps people to engage with science and technology, and to play a part in preserving and retore items of scientific interest for today and future generations.'
'Support from corporate members provides essential funding, allowing the Science Museum to continue its innovative programming and ultimately enabling the Museum to be the best place in the world for people to enjoy science,' said Marianne Rance, Head of Corporate Relationships.
The Museum has a large and historically important communications collection, comprising almost 5000 separate items. Notable items relating to the invention of the telephone including Philip Reis's pioneering but unsuccessful 'Telephon' of the early 1860s and items relating to the experimental and ultimately succesful work of Alexander Graham Bell.
Present-day collecting focuses, as far as possible, on new communications technology. In particular, representation of the mobile phone; not just the phones themselves but also base stations, aerials and switching equipment.
The Science Museum receives 2.7 million visitors per year, including 350,000 educational visits - more than any other comparable organisation. The museum also carries out more than 60,000 outreach visits for children at schools throughout the UK.
