MLL Telecom Demonstrates Best Practice Networking for the Public Sector at Socitm 2010
11 October 2010
Latest Ethernet First Mile (EFM) technology delivers high speed access to shared networks over existing copper telephone cables
MLL Telecom will be demonstrating the latest in EFM technology, which is fast becoming the best way of connecting schools and local authority offices at a low-cost, saving up to 65% compared to a traditional leased line.
Unlike residential broadband, EFM uses bundles of copper pairs (instead of a single pair), which means that EFM offers higher resilience, as well as the ability to deliver symmetric high speed ethernet services up to 40Mbit/s, so speeds for uploading data match those for downloading data. Also, because EFM can connect to an uncontended dedicated network, it doesn't have to share capacity with other users.
EFM is ideally suited to local authorities where there are typically a high density of sites, geographically close together, sharing a network. "Most local authorities will already have the infrastructure required for EFM. Using EFM allows them to take advantage of the existing assets already in the ground, making EFM much cheaper than fibre-based circuits and avoiding the need for expensive digs to install new lines," said Stuart Borgman, CTO, MLL Telecom. "Another advantage is that a connection can be set up very quickly, saving time as well as money."
In order to benefit from EFM, local authorities simply need to work with a licensed operator, such as MLL Telecom, who can build a network for them using existing BT Openreach copper cables. Higher speed connections and a high-speed backbone network can be added via fibre or microwave radio and the whole network can be designed to be shared across multiple public sector organisations, saving even more cost.
For a live demonstration of EFM in action visit the MLL Telecom stand (78/79) at the Socitm Conference.
