The Joys of a Good Service...

Ian Catlin - 19 October 2010

Oh the joy of good service! One of my greatest pleasures is stumbling across something, whether it be a product or a service, that simply does "exactly what it says on the tin". A couple of examples spring to mind, one, my Tivoli table radio never fails to impress with it's excellent sound and very simple operation - it has just one (BIG) dial to twiddle and a couple of other controls (e.g. volume), but when it's turned up, just a fraction more than the usual early morning level, it simply sings - fantastic! The other example is my desktop backup service on my home PCs called "Carbonite" - it simply backs up my files to the "cloud". Simple, reliable and when I had to re-create one of my kid's PCs after a bad disk crash, absolutely invaluable, restoring all their homework in a matter of hours, no fuss. Both the radio and the backup service show me that sometimes all you need is a simple device or function that really works well. The backup service is particularly interesting as I don't have to care about the complex networks, systems and storage used, I just get an internet connection, pay my annual subscription and let it run. I know that if I need it, it's there and if I call, they will quickly answer and help me. I'm pretty sure that this is the way forward with network services, what I mean is, do a complex job and offer it in a simple way... . Makes you think doesn't it?
