Mobile World Congress 2010: Bread today, Jamon tomorrow?
Richard Brandon - 19 February 2010
I have to confess I rather enjoyed this year's mobile fest in Barcelona. Aside from enjoying some excellent plates of local Jamon I was also treated to a plethora of LTE network demonstrations. In fact I must have seen more HD movies broadcast across the Spanish airwaves than you could find at your local Blockbusters. And very impressive it all was too. Not to mention the number of new smart-phones available for us to soak-up all this new content.
Then there was a lot of talk about network monetization. On this subject, however, I suspect that the major platform supporting network monetization is still Microsoft PowerPoint. So as I drove home from the airport I couldn't help thinking that if there's no new money yet, and a lot more content, how do we feed ourselves for the next few years?
After all, we still need to scale the network to deliver today's mobile data appetisers, which are only just arriving on the table, let alone serving up the LTE entrée. So perhaps what we need right now is simply a cost-effective hunk of crusty capacity in our networks to keep us going whilst we wait for the main course.
Anyway, enough food analogies from me, I'm off for a plate of sausage and mash, perhaps spiced up with a glass of Rioja.
