"The CloudFrame"
Ian Catlin - 9 September 2011
As I observed in a previous blog, current virtualisation and cloud technologies remind me of the way computing was delivered 20 years ago, i.e. centralised. I was chatting recently to a director of a cutting edge Cloud management company and it struck me that the ultimate goal for cloud appears to be "run applications natively, allowing control at the application layer, so that resources can be scaled and managed without the Operating System overhead..." (my words). Hold on, that sounds exactly like a Mainframe doesn't it?
Well, kind of, what I would like to see is a reasonably open system where I can publish my applications that takes care of all the housekeeping (security, resilience backup etc) and then gets out of the way. In fact, if I could just specify the service levels required and the amount I'm willing to pay, I'd be really happy. Well, in case someone's not done it already, I'd call that the "CloudFrame". Of course this will need the infrastructure to work seamlessly, with security and performance handled in an integrated way, along with the control and reporting. Any takers?
