Is it Worth it?

One of the things I often ask myself during the "dark days" of a new infrastructure or application deployment is: "is it even worth setting up all this monitoring stuff?" Invariably, as the system settles down and begins to become "part of the plumbing" the monitoring system starts to become the most useful thing... and it's not just the "OMG!" moments either - the long term reports and trends start to really become useful and can answer the questions like "when do we upgrade service XYZ", "how can we improve service / reduce cost" and quite possibly even turn up some new opportunities that would otherwise be invisible. So to answer my own question, yes it absolutely is worth it!
