Rain Doesn't Stop Play

Ginny Follen - 1 July 2011

It always rains at Wimbledon - it is an occurrence that practically defines the championship. Of course, typically, as soon as they build the roof on centre court we get two weeks of glorious sunshine for two consecutive years. But however deliciously British the rain makes the tournament, it does not stop it being a pain and dampening everyone's spirits. Although rain doesn't stop Wimbledon working - I'd wager we'd much rather it didn't rain at all.

It is not just the Wimbledon fans who are closely watching the weather, those engineers in Network Operations Centres around the UK also closely monitor the weather, but for different reasons - like how severe rain affects play at Wimbledon, severe rain can affect a network's wireless link.

This is why we built our equivalent of the centre court roof: we have 50 years worth of weather data covering UK wide, and factor these stats into our link builds - so when the heavens open our links will carry on performing.
