Harry Potter and the Mobile Backhaul Upgrade

If you had told me a couple of years ago that I would be able to talk about Harry Potter and mobile backhaul in the same sentence I would have thought you odd. However, as if by magic, I am about to do just that:

The same technology that will allow you to watch part two of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 3D uses the same principles that will allow mobile operators to upgrade their wireless mobile backhaul capacity by 100% without paying for delivery of new fibre.

There.

3D films project the one image from two views, each using a different polarisation of the light. Each lens on your 3D glasses only allows one polarisation through - thus creating a 3D effect. Cross Polarisation in mobile backhaul works in much the same way - by sending the same wavelength of microwave radio at different polarisations, the link can handle twice as much capacity - as shown by the graphic below.

It is not quite magic, but it is definitely clever...
