"Dad, where's all my bandwidth gone?"

Ian Catlin - 6 June 2011

The other day I was happily working away on my laptop at home when all hell broke loose - "Dad, Dad! Where's all the bandwidth gone?" Child one was in the middle of some home work and was mortified at the performance she was getting. Suffice to say it took all of three seconds to work out that child two was on his XBOX 360 and was collaborating with about five of his friends building a game world on-line - he was getting the bandwidth because the router has automatically given priority to his voice traffic. Of course, poor old dad didn't even notice the performance drop, not having any need to use great globs of bandwidth. All this made me think just how internet access is now taken for granted and that when its not working, it's a big problem. I'm beginning to think as Internet access becomes as ubiquitous as plumbing or electricity, we will see the demand for guaranteed supply growing with many different offerings available across the public sector, business and consumers, I for one will be looking for a higher quality service at home to keep the peace in the Catlin household!

We've discussed the implications of traffic prioritisation in a recent blog - The End of Net Neutrality.
