What the judges are looking for

A final year IET student member who can:

  • identify a telecoms problem and propose an innovative solution to tackle it
  • demonstrate commercial applicability, risk and operational practicality
  • write about and present their solution clearly, passionately and intelligently

To enter the competition, entrants need to identify a telecoms issue they'd love to fix. It could be delivery of new end-user services and applications, or a specific network delivery challenge. The solution could come from clever use of existing technology or be based on brand-new concepts. The judging panel wants to be surprised, excited and provoked by the entrant's innovative idea.

Entrants need to submit a written proposal, covering the challenge you've picked as well as their proposed solution. Shortlisted entrants will be invited to present in person to our panel of industry judges.

Some thoughts to get you started

About the job

In the role of systems designer you will spend time working in the following areas:

  • Network design - using the latest technologies to solve customer problems
  • Product management - a product manager is the bridge between technology and the business, applying technology to commercial propositions
  • Pre-sales technical support - a pre-sales consultant sits between the sales organisation and the technical team. They are responsible for creating solutions and designs, then articulating these to the customer.

Some areas for consideration or challenges that Telecoms providers constantly face include:

  • Improvement of design processes - to enable providers to offer customers the best possible solutions at the lowest possible cost.
  • Cost optimisation - how can the design and installation process be optimised in order to retain the best level of profitability possible?
  • Network modelling - could a 3D geographic representation of a radio network be beneficial to network designers?
  • Creation of new services for the public sector and mobile networks - what new services could be created to help differentiate our offering from that of our competitors?
  • Data management - this is a complex issue, with larger networks containing 1000s of data objects, housed in data centres. How can these be managed effectively?.
  • Service automation - could a way for customers to access information about their own networks be devised that would benefit providers and customers alike?
  • Green networking - Power and cooling have a significant impact on the environment, how can we limit the impact of these and other environmental issues?
